The Surrounding Area
Broseley
This neat little town sits on the lip of the wooded Ironbridge Gorge. A thriving industrial settlement in the 17th Century, it later became something of a haven for the rich ironmasters and merchants who prospered in the wake of the Industrial Revolution and built substantial properties here.
Highley
Highley Colliery was once at the heart of the rich Shropshire coalfields. However, the pit closed in 1969 and the village - still a village, although the size of a small town - adapted to a different lifestyle. But the strong community spirit remains, and the locals' pride in their mining heritage is reflected in the Discovery Trail, a specially commissioned series of artworks which leads visitors from the Severn Valley Railway Station to the village centre. The works - sculptures, bronzes and ceramics - show the history of Highley from Domesday to the present, and the men who cut the coal are given their due prominence.
